The Impact Fund and Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability hosted their 3rd annual Clean Water Forum in Bakersfield on April 1-2. The free two-day conference brought together practitioners, experts, and community groups to engage in strategic conversations regarding the state of water litigation, with a particular focus on work that can affect communities in California’s Central Valley. Dolores Huerta sent this greeting and call to action for those attending.
Who: Dolores Huerta Foundation along with HAZMAT America and local Bakersfield, CA activists When: TOMORROW, Thursday, Jan 6, 4-6pm PT Where: 4100 Empire Dr, Bakersfield, CA 93309, right outside Kevin McCarthy’s office What: Press Conference followed by a community vigil to CALL OUT Kevin McCarthy and DEMAND accountability, as part of the nationwide January 6 Vigil for Democracy Day of Action. The day will start with a press conference outside McCarthy’s office featuring the Sedition Petition billboard truck to make our message heard all across McCarthy’s district. Mobilize link here.
Masks and social distancing will be required. DHF encourages only those fully vaccinated to attend. January 6 was a violent and deadly attack against all Americans – against our country, our democracy, and our freedom as voters to choose the leaders that represent us so that we have a government of, by, and for the people. One year later, the same faction that attacked our country on January 6th is hard at work silencing our voices by restricting our freedom to vote, attacking fair voting districts, and quietly preparing future attempts to sabotage free and fair elections and with it our democracy.

This January 6, exactly one year later, Americans across race, place, party, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections. The promise of democracy is not a partisan issue but a calling that unites us as Americans. To prevent this kind of attack from happening again, our elected leaders must pass urgent legislation that will protect this country from anti-democratic forces who are continuing their efforts to destroy it. Coming together, we can prevent another January 6th attack and realize the promise of democracy for all of us – no matter our color, zip code, or income – so we all have an equal say in the decisions that shape our daily lives and futures. Creating fair district lines is the most important way to reclaim the voting power that’s been taken from us. It’s very likely that if you live in the Central Valley, elected representatives are being allowed to choose the voters in their district, rather than allowing the voters to elect their representatives in a fair & lawful election. This unlawful practice of gerrymandering has disenfranchised underrepresented communities and diluted our voting power.
We stress the importance of voting as it is the grand equalizer, but when Gerrymandering is involved your vote is suppressed. Gerrymandering in combination with voter suppression laws have silenced the voices of disenfranchised communities.
The situation is dire. Redistricting happens every 10 years after the census, where officials adjust district lines to ensure fair representation for federal, state, and local areas. No matter what, where or who, we all want what’s best for all communities.
The Dolores Huerta Foundation, in partnership with community leaders and other organizations, has come together to form the Equitable Maps Coalition and have painstakingly created Equitable Maps and districts that comply with the Voting Rights Act.
Join us in DEMANDING redistricting commissions adopt the Equitable Coalition Map throughout the Central Valley, especially in Kern, Fresno, Tulare & Kings County. Demand that your elected representatives know where your community is and what is important to you and those in your community by giving public comments at your local redistricting hearing.

“(This is an opportunity to) determine what kind of care we want, whether we want life-extending measures depending on our condition, and who will speak for us in case we get a life-threatening illness and cannot communicate our wishes for end of life care,” Huerta says in the video. “This is a great opportunity for us to reach out to our loved ones and start having those difficult but necessary conversations about advanced care planning.”
Join us as we urge Gov. Newsom, Speaker Anthony Rendon & President Pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins to pass AB4 to extend health care coverage to our undocumented community. Providing health care is a human right. For more information & how to get involved, please contact Lori Pesante at Lpesante@doloreshuerta.org

This year’s election goes beyond who will be president. Your vote is your voice on issues affecting housing, education, employment and healthcare.
Help make a difference in your community during this general election and join us in defending our democracy.
Here are just a few reasons why you should get registered and vote:
1. Elections have consequences.
You have the power to decide on the quality of life you want for yourself and future generations. Voting is your chance to stand up for the issues you care about like public transportation, raising minimum wage, or funding local schools. This is your life: take the time to help decide what’s best.
2. Not voting is giving up your voice.
Elections are decided by the people who go out and vote. Take some time and learn about the measures and the candidates. If you don’t vote, someone else will make the decision for you. Your power is in your vote.
3. It’s your money.
You pay taxes, but do you know how that money is being used? Most people don’t. Voting is your chance to choose how your tax dollars are spent – such as funding for health care and social services.
4. Voting is an opportunity for change.
Do you want to make a positive impact? Voting gives you that chance! Support the candidates and ballot measures that can help your community, state, and even the nation for the greater good. Make your voice heard in these elections.
5. The community depends on you!
Our communities are made up of friends, loved ones, neighbors, and children. Some may not know how important voting is, while others don’t have the privilege. Make the decision to vote for yourself and those around you.
